One Laptop per Child Review

January 28th, 2008 by StealthWarrior

OLPC-5
Back in November, we donated an XO Laptop to a child in a developing country as part of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project. The concept was to give one – get one free allowing us the opportunity to take a close look at this revolutionary PC. The ultimate goal is to get a low cost entry level machine into the hands of a child who normally would not have the opportunity.

As expected the notebook is extremely basic in design and performance. What did surprise us is just how rugged the construction is. We have seen expensive notebooks less sturdy then this little baby.

The LCD screen works in both direct sunlight and darkness. When compared to any entry level notebook the visuals do fall short in terms of viewing angles, contrast ratio, brightness and color. Overall the unit is pretty impressive when you weigh in the price vs. what you get. It certainly won’t provide any performance or productivity benchmarks however.

See the detailed review and inside look on the Notebookreview.com site

Specifications:

  • Processor: 433MHz AMD Geode
  • Display: 7.5″ LCD 1200×900 (black and white)/800×600 (color)
  • RAM Memory: 256MB DDR333
  • HD/Storage: 1GB Flash with SD Expansion slot
  • Wireless: 802.11b/g and 802.11s Mesh
  • Ports: 3 USB, Headphone, Microphone
  • Battery: 3.1Ah 6.5v
  • AC Adapter: 12VDC @1.42A, 100-240VAC
  • Dimensions: 9.52 x 8.97 x 1.26″
  • Weight: 3lbs 2.2oz, 1.4kg
  • Price $400 with the “Give One, Get One” program ($200 per laptop)

For a more detailed review and tear down of the unit please check out Kevin O’Briens article on the Notebookreview.com site

Wink wink, Dude Is that a light emitting diode in your eye?

January 25th, 2008 by StealthWarrior

LED-Contact

Apparently researchers at the University of Washington have developed a prototype contact lens that incorporates an imprinted electronic circuit and lights.

The prototype is a step toward creating a form of bionic vision, the researchers say.
The display could potentially create a surface for Web surfing in midair, flash a vehicle’s speed to a driver, or immerse someone in a virtual world, the university said.

The prototype lens does not correct vision, but the researchers say that it could someday offer “visual aids” to help people with vision problems.

the Auditors are coming … the Auditors are coming

January 24th, 2008 by Le Grand Fromage_Warrior

QMI Logo
Today is a very important day for us as it’s our annual ISO 9001:2000 Audit.

The ISO registration process is not a one time event but a long-term commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Although we attained ISO 9001 registration in 2001, we must continue to prove to an independent external auditor that our quality management system is effective and that our process improvement efforts are ongoing.

Stealth is audited by the Quality Management Institute (QMI) of Mississauga, ON. www.qmi.ca

We are happy to report our audit went very well.
Zero non conformances!

Thirty million transistors on the head of a pin!

January 22nd, 2008 by StealthWarrior

Thirty million transistors on the head of a pin. Think about that for a second.QuadCore

Intel’s new revolutionary 45nm processors seem to defy the laws of physics. Yup – its rocket science and beyond folks. When it comes to processors comprised of 800 million+ transistors, every fraction of a micron counts.

Whether you fancy yourself a propeller head or a member of the geek community you know four cores running at 3.2GHz is just “freakin’ fast”. Though the Core 2 Extreme QX9770 was delayed last week we look forward to seeing it in Feb/March time frame.

There’s just no denying that Intel is completely unstoppable at the present time when it comes to engineering, manufacturing and delivering multi-core processors. No other semiconductor company in the world is shipping anything in volumes at 45nm.

Looks like we will see Quad-core processors go mainstream in 2008.

FUN FACTS: EXACTLY HOW SMALL (AND POWERFUL) IS 45 NANOMETERS?

USB 3.0 coming down the track in 2008

January 19th, 2008 by StealthWarrior

USB Speed Watch for the emergence of the new USB 3.0 standard to unfold in 2008.

Intel and partners plan to release a new version of the Universal Serial Bus technology in the first part of 2008 with a data transfer rate of 10 times as fast as the current USB 2.0.

The third-generation USB interconnect will transfer data at speeds up to 4.8Gbit/s, ten times faster than USB 2.0’s 480MBit/s. It will be backwards-compatible with USB 2.0, and the first USB 1.1

Presently most devices won’t require that much data transfer however as larger storage devices, flash readers and blue ray optical devices become more popular the need will arise.

WayBac Machine Have you ever felt like taking a walk down a virtual memory lane?

The Wayback Machine or the Internet Archive, is a cool site that has been archiving web pages since 1996 and has over 55 billion pages in its archive at present. As of 2006 the Wayback Machine contained almost 2 petabytes of data and was growing at a rate of 20 terabytes per month.

R.I.P. Death of The Floppy Disc Drive

January 10th, 2008 by StealthWarrior

Are reports of its demise greatly exaggerated? …Um … NO! Floppy Drives

Now ask yourself, when was the last time you used a floppy?

Floppy discs have been around since the 1970s and remain the oldest form of low cost removable storage still around. In a sense, its amazing they have hung around for this long. They only hold 1.44 megabytes of available space — still enough for word processing docs but useful for little else. By comparison, CDs store upward of 700 megabytes, DVDs are 4.7GB and the flash memory USB thumb drives typically carry between 256MB up to 6.0GB or more

Now, there’s nothing really novel about ditching the floppy drive; after all, Apple and Dell did it years ago. For many the floppy has been dead for some time now. Once email attachments became mainstream most of us forgot they even existed. The floppy disc has several replacements; including writeable compact discs, USB/Firewire portable drives and the ever-popular USB keychain flash devices. All can hold much more data, are speedy to read/write data and are less likely to break.

USB 2.0 Flash Key

Most of Stealth’s systems today are shipped without the Floppy Drive. Many small form factor PC that we ship today are about the size of the old 5.25″ drive. There are still various legacy systems shipping from our factory with good ole Floppies mounted proudly within. As with most technology transitions, over time users figured out that they could do without. For now the choice is still up to the end user to decide.

Welcome to the CES jungle

January 9th, 2008 by StealthWarrior

Billy and Slash

Guitarist Slash, and Bill Gates during his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas 2008

Gates delivered what is expected to be his last keynote for CES in Las Vegas this past Monday night.

He predicted computer users would soon throw out the keyboard and mouse in favour of interacting with the PC using hand gestures, and envisioned a world where computers were built into the furniture and far easier to use.

Mr. Bill touched on 3 major themes for the future of technology during his speech: the proliferation of high-definition video and displays, the increasing connectivity and networking of everything electronic and the ever-growing sophistication of natural user-computer interfaces. (has he been poking around at Apple again?)

Why should you Defrag your Hard Drive?

January 8th, 2008 by StealthWarrior

Hard Disk Drive Guts

Improving system performance by using Disk Defragmenter

The hard disk drive in your PC is like a file cabinet and over time it can get pretty disorganized. When programs or files are installed on your computer they are typically broken up over multiple locations, increasing the time required for your computer to find and assemble all the pieces necessary to run the programs. This is called fragmentation. Fragmentation simply slows the performance of programs on your computer.

Running the “Defrag utility rearranges the files on your hard drive so they are back in order, which cuts down on access latency (the time it takes to access your files). As a result, your system can gain access to your files and folders and save new ones more efficiently.

There are many disk drive defrag utility programs available on the market. For an extensive list you may want to search the www.download.com site for assistance.

For information on how to Defrag disk drives please refer to Microsoft’s support page here.

CPU Benchmarks

January 7th, 2008 by StealthWarrior

Common CPU performance test

Over the past couple of years it has been increasingly difficult for the average customer to tell what the CPU performance is based on the CPU part number. Of course clock speed is no longer the only factor with new multi-core processors, increased cache sizes, die changes and power management enhancements.

Passmark Software has benchmarked over 10,000 processors. Here is a table of common processors showing their benchmark performance against each other.

Stealth Spotting on the Las Vegas Strip

January 3rd, 2008 by StealthWarrior

While meandering through the unbelievable maze of hotels in Las Vegas we stumbled upon one of our own products amidst the masses of LCDs recently.

Our 17” sunlight readable LCD was discovered in an outdoor kiosk at the Venetian Hotel.

After you take a tour on one of the cool gondolas, you will be offered a photo of your magnificent experience.

The Stealth high bright LCD shows a brilliant clean and crisp image in spite of the blazing desert sun.

Much to our own surprise you just never know where you may find a Stealth product.
