November 29th, 2007 by Andrew Pakula

Ed BoutilierRecently the folks at Google interviewed Stealths CEO, Ed Boutilier about the benefits of using search on the stealthcomputer.com web portal. Stealths website features Googles latest search technology – coined Custom Search Business Edition (CSBE)

1) Why did you need Google Custom Search Business Edition (CSBE)?We needed a highly effective way of providing detailed search capabilities to our website that has grown quite large in size over the past few years. This not only assists new and existing customers but provides easy access for company employees when guiding outside people.

2) What technology, if any, did it replace and why?
Over the years we have used several freeware scripts; they were basic in nature and lacked customization. They also lacked in the area of page relevancy, not returning the proper pages would have liked to have seen in the search results.

Where is Linux headed in 2008? – ask Linus

November 28th, 2007 by StealthWarrior

Linus TorvaldsIn an interview at Information Week Linus Torvalds the creator of Linux spills out his current excitement about the future of Linux

Torvalds: “So a lot of the effort ends up being hardware-related. Both in terms of peripheral drivers and simply in platform changes. The bulk of the kernel really isLinus Torvalds MAsk about hardware support, and that alone keeps us busy. The situation in graphics and wireless networking devices — both of which have been somewhat weak spots — is changing, and I suspect that will be a large part of what continues to happen during 2008 too.”

Will 2008 be the year of the SSD (Solid State Drive)?

November 26th, 2007 by StealthWarrior

SSD Technology is hot. Not to mean they run hot.
Solid state hard drives have been around for years but only used in specialized applications where traditional storage media would not fly.

flash_drive_hammer.jpgWith the diminishing prices of flash memory these hard drives are finding their way into many applications where in the past the cost wasn’t justifiable. These days we are seeing SSD installed in more mainstream applications. They are even being offered as an option in traditional commercial off the shelf products like laptops.

Solid State drives have two short comings compared with their rotating media cousins. They are offered in lower capacities and they still cost more despite the fact prices have fallen significantly in all storage media. For certain applications the extra cost is immaterial.

The positive attributes of Solid State Drives easily outweigh the negatives.

  • Extreme vibration & shock
  • Extended temperature ranges
  • Resistant to magnetic fields
  • Fast access times
  • Consume less power
  • No noise
  • High reliably

Stealth has offered SSD and Flash based storage media in their products for many years. If you have an application that would benefit from this technology please contact one of our applications specialists to learn more.

Intel’s latest CPU’s keeps Moores Law alive

November 16th, 2007 by StealthWarrior

Just when you thought we were nearing the end of Moores Law Intel kicks it up a notch.

The new Penryn series microprocessors are essentially a shrink of the current Core architecture that brought Intel back out of the woods in 2006. These are also the first chips to use Intel’s 45-nanometer manufacturing technology, leading the first change to the basic properties of the transistor since the 1960s.Intel Core CPU

Intel Corp will start production this week at a new $3 billion factory in Arizona called Fab 32 for the Penryn series chips. Shrinking dies, of course are the heart of Intel’s mission to relentlessly put more transistors on smaller dies until the end of time or Moore’s law, whichever comes first.

While cutting down on power usage, Penryn processors jump to higher clock rates and feature cache and design improvements that improve the processors’ overall performance compared with earlier 65-nm chips. Apparently the processors will deliver a 40 to 60 percent improvement in video and imaging performance.

One Laptop Per Child program is in production

November 8th, 2007 by Le Grand Fromage_Warrior

Well it looks like the One Laptop per Child program originally founded by Nicholas Negroponte is starting to take shape. The program hopes to spread the sub-$200 computers to schoolchildren in developing countries.

The nonprofit spin-off from MIT said assembly lines for its “XO” laptops were fired up Tuesday at a Chinese factory run by manufacturer Quanta Computer Inc. That means children should begin getting the green-and-white computers in the next month or so. Negroponte, said in September that Quanta would build about 250,000 XOs this year, ramping to 1 million a month in 2008.One Laptop PC

The initial recipients will be children in Uruguay, Peru and Mongolia. Beginning later this month people in North America will be able to buy one for themselves and donate the other to a child overseas through www.laptopgiving.org.

Phoenix introduces a technology thats allows a PC to boot in 4 seconds

November 6th, 2007 by StealthWarrior

While most of us wait anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes for our Windows machines to boot, Phoenix Technologies have come up with a way to avoid the delay.

Phoenix Technologies is best known for their BIOS (Basic Input Output System) – the firmware that starts the computer, initiates tests and serves as the interface between the machine and the operating system. The new technology, coined “Phoenix HyperSpace”, will be built on top of the existing BIOS and should be available on new Windows machines in the 6 to 9 month time frame. (not soon enough)

Woody Hobbs, chief executive of Phoenix, says HyperSpace allows a computer to boot within four seconds to a screen where the user can immediately do some basic tasks such as launching a Web browser or a DVD movie. The software utilizes “virtualization” to set aside a portion of the system memory and hard disk space. In this virtual space, called AppSpace, users can start various pre-installed programs that are determined in advance by Phoenix and the computer manufacturer.
